A Battery That Lasts Longer Than Your Smartphone? No Way – Way…
|10th June 2016|
If I was to tell you there is a battery that would last longer than your mobile phone, you would be thinking I had just come down in the last shower. However, scientists have stumbled across a battery that has been proven to outlast the mobile phone or other mobile device and they have done so purely by accident.
It’s no secret that batteries are a stumbling block to our improved technological future. Technology has come a long way since the clumsy computers of the nineties and the introduction of the so-called “brick” during the same decade. The brick was a mobile phone which looked more like a walkie-talkie and we sniggered at the yuppies who strolled around the town centre talking into these huge phones complete with massive aerials.
The introduction of the smartphone in 2007 was a massive leap and so was the smartwatch a few years later, but all these devices have an Achilles heel, they all consume a lot of power. There are so many apps running on a standard device these days that batteries are struggling to charge up enough to make the devices fit for purpose.
It seems that technology is leaping forward at some rapid pace but the lithium heart that tries to store its power is leaving this technology struggling. The problem is nothing new – scientists have been trying to improve battery power for decades.
whether you have an electric car, a smartphone, a tablet or anything else that is powered by a battery, you will be frustrated by the time it takes to charge up, the length of time it stays powered up and the amount of times you have to keep putting the device on charge.
The frustration is completed when technology adds more and more powerful apps and energy-sucking bits and bobs and your device goes down to 0 per cent even faster than you could ever imagine. Most of us were charging up our batteries every night back in 2001 and many of us are still doing likewise in 2016.
It was at the University of California in Irvine where a battery that can handle 200,000 charging cycles was discovered – that’s 400 times longer than your lithium battery in your phone right now. Now, although the mechanisms of the longer-lasting battery are not fully understood just yet, this is just the first corner of a revolution in longer-lasting batteries for our devices and a dream come true for those who hate having to charge up every single night.
