How About Charging Your Mobile Phone Along A Solar Road

In Holland you can do just that. The Dutch government has built a pilot project of solar panelled roads, many were sceptical as to their the success rate of these sun powered bike paths. But the experts who built these solar panelled roads have stated that the solar panels are working even better than they had expected. The 70-metre test bike path is said to be generating 3,000 kWh.

This amount of electricity is more than enough to light a household for an entire year. So you see the prospective is pretty wide. These solar panels can also be used to light the roads at night.

The Construction

The solar panels are inserted between glass, silicon rubber along with concrete, and are strong enough to endure the weight of a 12-tonne fire trucks without getting crushed or broken. Every single panel is hooked to a smart meter, which harvests the electricity and feeds it straight into street lighting, or the electrical network.

There is a non-adhesive coating applied on the top of the road and the road has been built with a slight slanting, these measures were taken to prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust on the solar cells. These panels can capture huge amounts of sunlight and the panels are designed to last for 20 years.

Initially as a trial, more than 150,000 cyclists were made to ride over these solar panels and no damage was caused. The solar road was complex and not without some technical difficulties within its design; there were temperature fluctuations that resulted in some de-lamination, all caused as a result of the contraction of the skid-resistant coating on the panels. It took the designers almost 5 years to make these panels tough and sturdy. But now with only some minor enhancements, they have to be made to make it a complete success.

The Netherlands is the first country to have succeeded in developing this solar road technology though several countries including the U.S have been working on implementing this invention for a long time. It is a huge relief to see engineers and scientists making such wonderful inventions to create a greener world. As we know the solar energy is a free renewable energy available in abundance. Incorporating this powerful and clean energy for brightening our homes and streets will lead to a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
