The casing of the Bamboo degradable mobile phone does exactly what it says. When the antenna, printboard and battery are removed, the casing, which contains bamboo seeds, can be placed into compost and in a few weeks the case degrades and a bamboo plant grows. The growth of the plant compensates the impact that the manufacturing process has on the environment.
Bamboo is endlessly renewable. It never needs to be replanted unlike hardwood trees, one cut means it's gone. Bamboo has an extensive creeping root system that grows new shoots and each shoot can grow two feet or more each day. Globally, one billion handsets are produced annually, each using 36kg of CO2 to make one 90g phone. Yet only 10% of phones are recycled.
The Bamboo degradable mobile is made from both bamboo and a bio-plastic which is derived from other renewable resources such as corn. Not only does the Bamboo turn into a plant but, this clever baby can be charged with muscle power too! It's built with a cranking charger. A three minute crank generates enough power to the battery to make one phone call.
