Solar-Powered Touchscreens May Soon Charge our Phones...

Greener Mobiles

The race to find the most effective, low cost, user friendly way to power your eco mobile phone may have been won by a French company Wysips.  How have they done it, well their idea is based on a few layers of a thin transparent film of photovoltaic sunsensitive material (which is so thin less than a 100 microns, about the thickness of a human hair) on top of the phones touchscreen area.

Few things can be worse being caught out than by getting the red battery warning light on your mobile.  And there are lots of ideas of how to power your mobile being thrown around, but what makes the Wysips idea so compelling is that it effectively does away with a lot of the bulk in a mobile phone.  But it's not only mobile phones that can benefit from this new technological breakthrough by turning more or less any material, like glass, plastic or material into a photovoltaic energy source.

How important is this idea, well if you imagine if that there are nearly 6 billion mobile phones in the world all drawing power from your local power station.  If they all were using WYSIPS technology we could save around three gigawatts of power produced, or the equivalent of three nuclear power plants as a WYSIPS phone would produce, store and use its own energy from the sun to keep you talking, nice…
