Whats a green mobile phone without a good green app? The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has launched a Green Application challenge - a $10,000 award awaits the designer/designers to come up with the very best climate aware app. Thanks to the sponsors of the competition RIM (Blackberry to you and me) and Telefónica, the winners will be invited to present their concept app at the Green Standards Week held in Italy this September.
The closing date for entries for this competition is 17:00 CET June 17th 2011.
Secretary General of the ITU Dr Hamadoun Toure, said, “We have seen how ubiquitous apps have become and how useful they can be. The Green ICT Application Challenge is our way of spurring a next wave of innovation tackling real world problems. We are excited to see what developers will create to influence this truly global problem.”
So you’ve a few days left to think outside of the box and come up with something that can contribute to climate change. The brief is very broad, you can design pretty much anything that looks at green community based projects, eco design, monitoring climate change, emissions, disaster relief; whatever you come up with. So if you need more information of what to be designing eg the rules, entry requirements etc, go to
