How To Be Green

Eight ways to be green and help save the planet. If you really want to learn how to be green, these tips range from really simple to requiring a bit of effort. Do what you can and together we’ll make the world a better place for future generations.

Pick Carbon Neutral Tech Companies

We need to live our lives, so we can’t reasonable be expected to cut back on everything. What we should be expected to do is make the most environmentally friendly choices whenever possible. One great solution is to use carbon neutral companies like Microsoft who will have removed all carbon ever emitted in their entire history by 2050.

With Microsoft taking such action to become carbon negative by 2030, you could buy a computer (if Intel can pull this off), use a carbon neutral energy supplier, carbon neutral web browser and search the web using Bing or the environmentally concious Ecosia.

Get A Decent Bank Account

Regular banks are in bed with the fossil fuel industry real deep. Talking tough is worthess if they won’t back that up with investment in new technology and cutiing off the old dirty ones.

Fact is, fossil fuel investments work and they’re guaranteed to provide a predictable return. There is still some risk and vthus slightly less returns posible from renewabe tech. This is something we must be real about but if we don’t invest in green energy now, it’ll n ever work.

YOu can be green by usung a bank (or personal finance company) like Aspiration who promise “71x more interest. 100% fossil fuel free”, and that “deposits won’t fund fossil fuel exploration or production’. Perfect. But they’re only available in the United States, so that’s not good. Let us know on Twitter @Greenermobiles if there are any similar organisations in the UK we could review.

Use Renewable Energy Suppliers

Use a renewable energy supplier like this from the USA, but there is also

Green Energy UK

Octopus Energy

Bulb

This will make the biggest impact in your daily life and shows you really do practice what you preach. Plus the more of us who choose 100% renewable energy suppliers in the UK, the more companies will see it as an opportunity to provide a service people want. We’ll get more efficient renewable technology and everyone will be happy.

The UK market for green energy has become smaller in the past few years with suppliers like GOTO Energy and Pure Planet going bust in 2021. Pure planet fell off the radar after BP stopped bankrolling it, so we’re not sure if that was irony or justice.

Use A Carbon Neutral Mobile Phone Network

The use of mobile phone networks can really add up when it comes to carbon emissions. As individuals it may not be so much, but as a nation it really starts to add up.

If you really want to be green, you’ll check out our list of UK mobile phone networks and how green they are. Don’t forget to check the tier 2 suppliers because they can often have better deals, but not all of them have a green Tier 1 network providing them with the infrastructure.

Drive An EV

If you already have a renewable energy supplier, it’s the perfect way to reduce your impact on the planet even more. Okay so there are still issues with sourcing battery materials, how long they last and how we’ll deal with them at the end of their life, but there are new solutions appearing all the time. That’s why it’s important to work with banks and financial institutions who are really committed to change.

Some EVs you might like to try are:

  • Polestar 2
  • Lucid Air
  • Audi RS E-Tron GT
  • Mini Cooper SE
  • Kia EV6
  • Citroen Ami
  • Porsche Taycan
  • Toyota bZ4X
  • Maserati MC20
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5
  • Volvo XC90

And we’re wondering if this one is a joke. GMC Hummer EV. Huh? An all electric hummer. For real?

Walk or Cycle More

Of course only if you feel you can and it’s safe. Our urban planning leaves a lot to be desired with the way it favours cars as the primary mode of transportation. Oh well, at least we actually have public transport unlike other countries outside Europe.

Things may be a little more difficult in the countryside, but let’s make sure we walk or cycle more when possible. There are also electric scooters that are becoming more popular. Are they legal to use where you are?

Reduce Packaging

Buy products that have less packaging and if you want, return excessive plastic and cardboard packaging  to the shop. The key here is to compare different products and make the concious decision to pass up the one with a lot of packaging in favour of the one with less.

Ban Your Hosepipe

Last summer we had a particularly dry spell. By the time a hose[pipe ban came into force, we got some much needed rain. Instead of waiting for the government to tell us not to use our hose pipes, get a water butt and start saving any rainwater for your garden.

The ultimate in recycling, you’ll be able to save enough water to keep your plants going for a while and of course you won’t water that thirsty lawn which will bounce back quickly.
